Bob and Beth are both Michiganders and met at the University of Michigan, married and moved to Philadelphia to attend grad school. They then lived for a few years in Dayton, OH before landing in Atlanta, GA in 1978. Since 2015, they have divided their time between a condo in Atlanta and a cabin in Sapphire, NC!
Professionally, Bob worked as a software engineer for NCR since the start of the big transition from mechanical to electronic cash registers. Beth’s career path was multi-faceted- research assistant in the pharmaceutical industry, biomedical engineering tech at Yerkes Primate Research Center, computer programmer and database consultant in addition to volunteer efforts in political campaigns (ideas & candidates) and as a legislative aide.
Beth looks forward to the Legacy Community Gardens as she loves to “dig in the dirt to stay sane”! She has a particular interest in and plans to continue cultivating the native plants of the southeastern U.S. She volunteers at the Southern Highlands Reserve at Lake Toxaway. Beth continues to be active in opportunities to strengthen our democracy, especially those relating to voting
Bob volunteers with AARP Foundation’s TaxAide program which provides free tax prep and filing for those in need. He enjoys, golf, croquet, bridge, WordsWithFriends, and especially loves woodworking projects or any project that requires a clever solution.
And, both Bob and Beth love long woodsy strolls with their dog, Vivi!
Bob’s mother was a WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilot) during WW II.
This couple declares that they are “flexitarians”…leaning towards but not strictly vegetarian! They love good Indian, Thai, Ethiopian and Mediterranean fare!
Bob and Beth love the forests and weather patterns of the North Carolina mountains but feel it wise to be close to “city-level” medical facilities. Having remodeled several homes in their married life, they have honed the elements of design that they would like in this future home. Being able to incorporate some of those design choices is viewed as one of the many great benefits of Legacy!
An active lifestyle and community members with similar time to participate excite the Nathans! Beth will surely be looking to keep her gardening gloves dirty in the community gardens and perhaps give input into the landscaping of the Legacy site especially given her interest and knowledge in the southeastern U.S native plants! Maybe her database skills will have a use also.
Bob is looking forward to meeting other Legacy woodworkers and developing the Legacy Wood Shop! Additionally, he’d like identify/encourage fellow croquet players.
