ABOUT
Since 2011, Barbara and Elaine have lived on the edge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, seven miles outside the sweet mountain town of Bryson, City NC. They moved there from Bradenton, FL after they retired.
Barbara and Elaine have been together since 1995 and were legally married in 2014.
Barbara was born and raised in Miami FL. With the exception of spending a couple of years in Montana and until retirement, she always lived in Florida. Elaine was born and raised in Boston, then moved to Minnesota and ultimately to Florida.
Barbara earned her degree in Leisure Services and spent more than 30 years in various positions with the city of St. Petersburg, FL – from supervising a recreation center to administrative coordinator of the Recreation Department. After earning an MBA, she spent time as a budget analysist and grants coordinator.
Elaine has been an RN since she was 20 and spent the next 20 years in clinical practice (nurse manager in critical care to Director of Nursing). Meanwhile she continued her education (MS, PhD) and spent the next 25 years as a nursing faculty member and program director at universities in Rhode Island and Florida.
HOBBIES
Both Barbara and Elaine volunteer with the Swain County Caring Corner, a free clinic. Elaine is a nurse and Board member while Barbara serves as Treasurer. They enjoy travelling and cruising when it’s time to get away.
Barbara likes being outside golfing, playing Pickleball and working in the yard in her overalls. She also likes to watch her favorite sports teams, the Rays and the Bucs.
Elaine serves as a Guardian ad Litem (court advocate for foster children). She also enjoys reading and shopping, especially with Amazon Prime.
SURPRISED TO KNOW
Much to her parents’ dismay, Barbara took a couple of gap years during college. She worked at a dude ranch near West Yellowstone and a ski resort near Glacier National Park. Barbara’s retirement job was a table games dealer at the casino in Cherokee.
Elaine had her own motorcycle when she was younger – alas, no more. She collected antique nursing text books (previous to 1930) and recently donated her 80+ volume collection to the Boston University, Nursing History Research Library.
WHY LEGACY?
The Legacy model of home ownership is just the kind of community Barbara and Elaine had been looking for. The location near Asheville was a definite draw. They are thankful there is not a never-ending waitlist, are relieved that access to good health care will be available, and love being part of the Founding Guild adventure with the opportunities for socializing and forging new friendships. They say they can already sense that Legacy is going to be the right place for them.
FUTURE AT LEGACY
Barbara will bring her love of, and experience in, all aspects of recreation. She’s also anxious to learn pottery and woodworking.
Elaine believes there will likely be a place to use her background in healthcare.
