ABOUT

Travel has been a major retirement activity for the Bairds over the last 20 years. They’ve visited every continent – except Antarctica, which they say is just too cold – visited dozens of countries – and lived in four different cities: Leesburg, VA, New Orleans, Annapolis, and since 2015, Asheville, where they live in the Kenilworth neighborhood close to the Biltmore Estate.

And they both have enjoyed artistic success.

Ann, who was an art major at Michigan State, has works in many private collections, has participated in many exhibits and most recently has been part of the Kenilworth Studio Tour in Asheville. Iain attended a writing program at Loyola University in New Orleans and has had two books published, including a collection of prize-winning short stories (he points out with false modesty), entitled “The Guy in the Box.” He has worked with a number of groups to promote the visual and performing arts.

Ann has also been an art teacher in both private and public schools and at adult learning centers. She was the founding president of the Loudoun Arts Council and has served on many arts-related boards. She most recently served on the Asheville Art Museum’s Gala Committee.

Iain, who studied international relations at Johns Hopkins, worked for the federal government on national security and trade issues, completing his career as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Export Administration with the Commerce Department.

HOBBIES

The Bairds’ artistic interests are reflected in some of their leisure time choices – attending music, dance, and theater performances and enjoying the local gallery scene. They enjoy reading, writing and continuous learning about a variety of subjects. You can find them checking out local restaurants and cooking at home, no doubt followed by their fitness pursuits, especially yoga and swimming. Entertaining friends and their two children’s families, which include four grandkids, is something that brings them a great deal of pleasure.

SURPRISED TO KNOW

Ann has a vast horde of Mardi Gras beads that she values like fine jewels. (Watch out for the Legacy Mardi Gras party.)

Iain spent his formative years (1959-1962), age 14-17, living in India, where his father worked with the United Nations.

WHY LEGACY?

Ann and Iain look forward to the chance to be part of a new community with folks at a similar point in their lives. The proposed design of the complex and the equity model are additionally attractive.
