ABOUT
Cupid’s arrow found Lucy and Kirk when they were in their mid-50’s and introduced by a mutual friend. For 25 years they lived only a mile apart in a Chicago suburb where they each raised families and worked – Lucy in residential real estate and Kirk in marketing – but had never met!
With their three adult children having moved west, Lucy and Kirk became interested in Asheville with all its natural beauty and more laid-back lifestyle. In 2006 the Borlands built a vacation home in Biltmore Lake, which they eventually made their permanent retirement residence once the eleven-hour drive back and forth to Chicago lost its “charm.”
HOBBIES
Volunteering has become a way for the Borlands to use their many talents and interests. Lucy has given her time and support to various philanthropic organizations including the Asheville Symphony Guild and Children’s Welfare League. Kirk uses his marketing knowledge to help grow Asheville area entrepreneurs, promote UNC Asheville’s athletes and athletic programs and assist with governance activities at OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) College for Seniors.
Lucy takes great pleasure in reading and discussing both fiction and non-fiction. Creative cooking is another of her passions, about which Kirk notes he’s especially appreciative!
Kirk enjoys exploring the world of genealogy and all things Apple.
Both Kirk and Lucy love live theater, the art of French impressionist painters and music of all genres. International and domestic travel is another one of their great joys, making real those people and places which for years have only resided in books and movies. But perhaps the most rewarding pleasure lately is when they get to share adventures with their seven grandkids—cheering them on in their diverse endeavors from sports to the arts as they develop their skills, talents and personalities.
SURPRISED TO KNOW
Kirk credits his time serving as a non-commissioned officer in the U.S. Army as an unexpected, valuable opportunity for learning about people from different backgrounds as well as the challenges of leadership. Meanwhile, one of Lucy’s first jobs out of college was modeling dresses constructed of paper!
WHY LEGACY?
Planning ahead for the time when independent living would become more challenging, Lucy and Kirk are determined to still live on their own terms without relying on family. As they looked at possible CCRC options in the area, Legacy in terms of philosophy and value stood out. They found themselves evolving from reluctant residents to eager future members.
They especially like that Legacy is striving to attract a demographic still enthusiastic about embracing new adventures in an active and stimulating environment that leans more toward resort living rather than serving as ‘a retirement home’.
FUTURE AT LEGACY
Lucy looks forward to helping support Legacy’s welcoming and inclusive spirit while Kirk expects to become engaged with some aspect of Legacy’s governance.
