James & Vicki Weil

ABOUT

Over the course of her career, Vicki held senior executive roles for health insurance companies, primarily, Prudential and Oxford Health Plans, a New York based company, bought by United Healthcare in 2004.  She then served as Chief Operating Officer for two companies in need of improved financials & efficiencies, and started a consulting company, with clients in Connecticut, New York, and India. She joined a client company as COO where she spent the last 5 years of her career before retiring in December 2015.

James spent the last 40 years of his work life at the intersection of gerontology and business. He established and managed MetLife’s long term care insurance business and their Mature Market Group, a corporate division responsible for orchestrating all issues related to marketing to the fifty-plus population. After early retirement, he was a principal in three startups and consulted with numerous companies involved in innovation and disruption in the aging space. He has served on the Boards of many not-for-profit organizations in the field of aging, including Road Scholar (Elderhostel), The Eden Alternative, The American Society of Aging, The National Alliance for Caregiving, and more.

We moved to north Asheville (Reynolds Mountain) in April 2016 from Connecticut.  Our children and grandchildren are in CT, FL, and TX so besides escaping the harsh winter weather, we are now equal distance to our family. Knowing we would likely sell our house in 2-3 years (we had been on a CCRC waiting list since early 2019) we decided to take advantage of the hot real estate market in December 2020. We sold our house (and said goodbye to house and yard maintenance), moved into a “transition home,” revisited Legacy and immediately signed up. We consider this time our “gap years” and are back on track post-Covid with upcoming travel plans, enjoying pickleball and resuming our volunteer activities.

HOBBIES

We enjoy multi-sport travel domestically and internationally, pickleball, tennis (James), OLLI classes, hiking, walking, and volunteering. Vicki enjoys making photo books of our travels. To make the most of our COVID lockdown days, we both wrote memoirs for our six grandchildren.

SURPRISED TO KNOW

We met online 10 years ago and are extremely fortunate to have a loving, close blended family.  We got married in September 2020 (the highlight of our Covid lockdown days!) and celebrated in person with our entire family on Hilton Head in August 2021.

Beginning at age 50, James began undertaking adventures that challenged him physically and enriched him mentally. He has traveled to 73 countries. He bicycled across the U.S. for his 55th birthday, climbed Mt Kilimanjaro for his 58th, biked the Silk Road from Istanbul to Kashgar, China for his 65th. He has trekked in Bhutan, Peru, Scotland, Patagonia, New Zealand, and many more places. And of their many travels together, their favorite place in the world is the Londolozi Game Reserve in South Africa!

WHY LEGACY

The real gift of becoming a Legacy member is for our children’s peace of mind as we age.

Other factors are the equity model, new construction, compliance with LEEDS standards, customization of our home, Legacy’s open communication and transparency, “patient” equity, and Elizabeth’s expertise, professionalism, and responsiveness.

It is sobering to think about choosing “our last home.”   However, the stress evaporated when we made the decision to move to Legacy; it includes a strong community, interesting people, age and ability-focused activities, a lovely home, and worry-free healthcare for the remainder of our lives.

FUTURE AT LEGACY

Vicki is a past President of the Reynolds Mountain HOA and may be interested in working on projects or short-term committees at Legacy. Both of us are looking forward to the adventures ahead!
