Martia & Bob Newell

Both native New Yorkers, Martia and Bob lived most of their lives in New York and New Jersey.  Then, Martia’s job beckoned them to Georgia which allowed them to get a taste of life in the South!  Their next move was then a smooth transition as they settled in Hardeeville, SC outside of Hilton Head Island where they presently reside, enjoy the beach and generally great weather.  They escape to their vacation home in Flat Rock in the summers to flee the South’s often oppressive heat!  As for their respective careers, Bob was a software engineer in the financial industry spending the final 15 years of his career with Morgan Stanley.  Martia was also a software engineer and project manager…first with J. M. Huber Corporation and, ultimately, with ADP.

The Newells are tried and true travelers/cruisers having already visited 74 countries…and looking forward to checking Antarctica off their list sometime in the future.  Bob is an avid golfer, so he will be in very good company among our many golf loving residents!  Martia is an accomplished duplicate bridge player and will also revel in communing with the Legacy residents who have voiced their love of that game! Finally, Martia is also an amateur photographer.

Life Happens…home or abroad!  While on a world cruise, Bob had a kidney stone.  As the closest hospital was in Angola (west coast of Africa), he elected to deal with it on the ship!

Martia has sung 6 operas in Carnegie Hall!!  Her vocal accomplishments include singing with a chorus in Princeton, NJ, performing with the Opera Orchestra of New York, the Michael O’Neal Singers of GA, and the Savannah Philharmonic Chorus!

Their home in Flat Rock has allowed them to explore the area.  Knowing they wanted a CCRC and Legacy was in the area they’d grown to love, making their reservation for their Legacy home was an easy choice!  They had done their due diligence and learned that NC was strong in the regulation of CCRCs.  Upon exploring the beauty of both the site and the proposed design elements of the community, they felt that Legacy would be more elegant than other similar communities and were anxious to include the whole package in their future.  Two features that held high importance for Bob and Martia were the pool and the Life Care Option.

Martia would like to organize a duplicate bridge club at Legacy and coordinate with nearby bridge clubs as well!  Bob would also participate in that duplicate bridge club…and in the many golfing activities that will be arranged!
